Why it’s Fun to Fly

Ever since man could wonder and dream, he has looked up to the sky and wanted to fly. Now that dream is a reality of everyday life. You can go to the airport and go anywhere in the world. Flying on a commercial airline to a destination is one type of flying experience, but why is it fun to fly your own plane? What makes the experience of flying so exhilarating?
Flying is an adventure. It takes you to heights that are impossible to reach any other way. It is like exploring the world all over again like Columbus did. You see the world from a different perspective, but because you are flying the plane, you feel the experience. It is so different from getting on a commercial airline. When you fly commercially, you are a passenger. It is a passive experience. But when you fly the plane yourself, you and the plane are one. It is a sport, a challenge, an adventure.
Flying is a challenge. You get the exhilaration of defying gravity. As the plane takes off, you know that you are responsible for the liftoff. You are behind the controls, guiding the plane down the runway, climbing to higher altitudes, adjusting for wind drift. You can soar into the clouds and feel as you if you are the only one flying…as if this has never been done by anyone else before. You are living the adventure that man has dreamed of for hundreds of years.
Flying gives you a sense of solitude. You are up there in the sky with no one else even close by. You and the Earth are miles apart. As you fly through the air, you get an appreciation for the Earth below you…the only home mankind has ever known. It is an awesome experience—one that is impossible to experience on a commercial airline. For after all, on a commercial airline flight, you are one among so many others. If you do not look at the window, you could just as easily be on a bus or train going someplace with hundreds of other people. But when you are flying solo, that experience is just about you and the sky.
Flying gives you a thrill like no other. From the beauty of the clouds to the speed of the plane, man begins to feel like the eagle he watches from Earth. It is an experience of a lifetime and one that is truly unforgettable.
